Bust of Viola Desmond Unveiled

On November 8, the bust of Canadian Civil Rights Activist, Viola Desmond, was unveiled in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Created by NSS Elected Member Chippie Kennedy, the life-size portrait honors the woman who challenged the segregation policy of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia by sitting in the white section of a movie theater. Her actions help start the modern Civil Rights movement in Canada and in 2018, her image was placed on the Canadian ten-dollar note. Although Viola Desmond died in 1965, her sister, Wanda Desmond, was on hand at the unveiling along with other top Canadian officials.
