Jeff L. Hall
Commemorating Juneteenth, sculptor Jeff L. Hall unveiled two 7-feet tall bronzes at the Douglass Community Center in Leesburg, VA: Martin Luther King, Jr. and Barack Obama. For King, Hall sought to convey his roles as both a Civil Rights leader and a reverend. “This piece was inspired from his speech ‘I Have Been to the Mountain Top.’ So, on the base here, there’s a little relief of a mountain range. He has been to the mountain top and he has seen the promised land,” Hall said. “His one hand is reaching out … he’s gesturing to the promised land, and his other hand—he’s carried a speech or notes a lot of times—so he’s kind of crushing that and shows the conviction and the powers of the words he’s expressing.” With Obama, Hall highlighted his tendency to make points using his finger. “That’s what inspired this pose. His jacket is open because he was a casual man,” he said.
