US DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR: BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT 

Website -The BLM Artist-in-Residence program is managed locally by a participating BLM field office or site, often in conjunction with one or more partner organizations. Participating sites often change from year to year. As part of the program, an artist provides a public presentation. This brings the program full circle, sharing the artist’s experience and connecting a broader public audience with public lands through the artist’s direct experience. Each site has its own process and timeline. Check the BLM website for programs or to apply for your own residency.

NATIONAL PARKS FOUNDATION

Website – The National Parks Arts Foundation (NPAF) has produced 300-plus programs and supported more than 120 artists through residency programs in partnership with the National Park Service, connecting parks with working artists. Residencies offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for artists to work on projects of their choice, away from the distractions of everyday life. The NPAF also works closely with museums, galleries, and curators to keep residency programs relevant to the Art World beyond the parks and to bring the highest-caliber artists to the parks.
FUNDING: Provides a stipend to reimburse expenses, but payments are made after the residency. The selected resident must be able to cover travel, equipment, and food costs during the residency. Review more details about grant funds on our FAQ pages for each residency.

ALABAMA AIR/ALABAMA CONTEMPORARY ARTS CENTER
Website – Duration: Three weeks; time can be consecutive or spread throughout the year. About: This statewide partnership residency program places artists in short-term, project-based residencies throughout Alabama. ACAC partners with sites statewide to place relevant projects and practices in underserved areas and to support research-driven residency programs aligned with localized histories, community needs, and areas of specific interest. Funding: A $500 per-week stipend for food and travel, plus a $1,500 honorarium at the end of the residency upon completion of a public-facing outcome. Additional support for materials is sometimes awarded based on the proposed project.

SLOSS MERAL ARTS RESIDENCY
Website – DURATION: Three-year, full-time work-residencies working in Sloss’ historic iron foundry and eight-week visiting artist residencies. ABOUT: This is a full-time work-residency position, with time split between Sloss commissions and outreach projects and your personal artistic practice. Resident Artists perform all foundry-related tasks, including fabrication, maintenance, and education. They work closely with the Foundry Manager and Metal Arts Director to advance Sloss Metal Arts’ mission through compelling artistic programming and visionary strategic planning. FUNDING: Resident Artists receive a salary, insurance, a materials stipend, and workspace in our historic foundry. Residents are expected to work approximately 30 hours/week for Sloss Metal Arts and 10 hours/week on their personal practice. Time worked for Sloss may include creating commissions, teaching workshops, foundry maintenance, historic restoration, and more.

CHULITNA LODGE CREATIVE RESIDENCY PROGRAM, LAKE CLARK

Website – ABOUT: Located 180 miles from the nearest road, with fly-in access only. The Lodge is a historic landmark on the shores of Lake Clark National Park. Creative residencies for authors, performers, and visual artists who share a love of responsible exploration of remote places. Facilities are sufficient for many processes, including a complete wood shop representing almost every tool one would need. No ceramic facilities, but they plan to host kiln-building and pottery workshops in the near future. Most required materials can be flown in with sufficient notice. FUNDING/FEES: Three ways to participate: 1. Fellowship, all expenses covered; participation in daily chores and dishes; full six-week commitment required. 2. Resident Artist, a highly reduced fee for weekly room and board; limited participation in daily chores and dishes. 3. Honorary Resident, $3,800/week; no chores required; residency cost includes all expenses and gourmet meals; travel not included.

THE MEDIUM ARIST RESIDENCY

(A Project of CACHE) – Website

DURATION: Six weeks plus three weeks for move-in/out (nine weeks total) ABOUT: An inclusive space for expression, experimentation, and creative risk-taking, led by a team of practicing artists. Open to 2D and 3D artists living in Benton or Washington Counties in Northwest Arkansas. Access to certain media is limited due to studio dimensions, including an eight-foot ceiling. FEE: $3,000 FUNDING: Eight available awards

ARIZONA STATE PARKS ARTIST RESIDENCY, ORACLE STATE PARK

Website – DURATION: Three weeks ABOUT: This program is a collaborative initiative between Arizona State Parks and Trails and the Arizona Commission on the Arts, designed to immerse Arizona-based artists in the state’s natural ecosystems. Includes on-site housing, a studio, and access to the park. FUNDING: $5,000 stipend plus $1,000 reimbursable materials budget

ARIZONA-SONORA DESERT MUSEUM ART INSTITUTE, SOUTH RIM GRAND CANYON

Website – DURATION: Four to ten weeks

ABOUT: Contemporary artists with demonstrable success in creating place-based, immersive, interactive, or participatory artworks that center the audience’s experience. Our artists typically focus on environmental sciences and/or regional histories.

FUNDING: Weekly stipend and travel subsidy

ANDERSON RANCH ART CENTER

Website – DURATION: Five to ten weeks ABOUT: Well-equipped studios with access to hands-on technical assistance, visiting artists, and critics—all with housing and meals steps away. Anderson Ranch is in the town of Snowmass Village and offers up to forty-eight residencies split between fall and spring in ceramics, new media, photography, furniture design, woodworking, painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. Thirty-two of the residencies are fully funded fellowships. FEES: Fall residents pay $1,500 for the 10-week Residency Program, and Spring residents pay $750 for the five-week Residency, plus a $100 studio fee. FUNDING: A select group of the forty-eight residencies is awarded fully funded fellowships by the jury panel.

CENTER FOR THE ARTS EVERGREEN

Website – DURATION: Twelve weeks ABOUT: Offering opportunities for emerging and established artists to foster creativity and community engagement while developing new works and works-in-progress. CAE welcomes artists working across disciplines and media, including visual artists, sculptors, musicians, writers, filmmakers, and more. Residents receive housing, private studio space, and teaching and sales opportunities. Artists are asked to develop and facilitate a community program related to their residency plan. FUNDING: $250 stipend/month upon completion of residency ($750)

PLATTEFORUM, DENVER

Website – DURATION: Eight to ten weeks ABOUT: They accept artists in all media and have a soft spot for socially engaged work. Residents lead weekly workshops with ArtLab interns, culminating in exhibitions and/or performances with local youth. In return, PlatteForum provides the artist with marketing and promotion, fabrication assistance, teaching assistance, opening event coordination, studio visits with local curators, and artwork sales. The Artist Residency program is open to artists in all genres and disciplines. Applications from established professional artists, emerging artists, and graduate students are welcome. FUNDING: Residents receive a $350/week working stipend and a materials’ stipend of up to $750, plus an additional $200 stipend for pre-residency workshop curriculum planning in collaboration with PlatteForum youth program staff.

REDLINE CONTEMPORARY ART CENTER, DENVER

Website – DURATION: Two years ABOUT: RedLine is a nonprofit contemporary art center focused on socially engaged art. Our mission is to foster education and engagement between artists and communities to create positive social change. In addition to mentorship, career development, and exposure to unique opportunities through our open-studio format, artists receive fully subsidized studio spaces for two years, beginning in the fall. This provides financial flexibility and frees artists to explore and experiment without the constraints of commercial pressures. The residency also offers artists the opportunity to work closely with peers in a supportive environment that fosters networking and collaboration within the community. FEE: No fee, studios are fully subsidized

FOUNDATION HOUSE ARTISTS RESIDENCY PROGRAM/CLIMATE THEMED RESIDENCY

Website – DURATION: Nine days ABOUT: Every few months, Foundation House opens its doors to artists and activists working on projects related to our mission to improve environmental, community, and mental health. Creatives of all disciplines—painters, writers, sculptors, designers, visionary thinkers, and doers—are offered an inspiring retreat, space, and time to create or work with their teams. Residents will eat dinner together every evening to build relationships and familiarize themselves with one another’s work, fostering feedback and collaboration. Our residency is a working residency. Accepted residents are expected to carry their proposed projects through and create work aligned with Foundation House’s mission and the session’s themes. FUNDING: Each resident will receive a stipend, a private bedroom, a private or semi-private bathroom, all meals, full kitchen access, access to a studio space, a wide variety of common areas, and seventy-five acres of land to explore and enjoy.

ON::VIEW ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM
Website – DURATION: Three weeks to one month ABOUT: Located in the heart of Savannah’s Starland District at ARTS Southeast, the ON::VIEW Artist Residency provides a free, high-visibility studio space for an artist to complete a new project, continue an in-progress endeavor, or conduct research exploring conceptual, material, performative, and social practices. The studio’s large windows face Bull Street, the district’s main thoroughfare, keeping the artists’ work visible to the community at all times. ARTS Southeast’s visitors and passersby on the sidewalk witness the artists’ process as it unfolds in real time, seeing all the steps from concept to final execution. Community events such as workshops, performances, public art projects, and artist talks offer creative ways to engage with the public. The ON::VIEW Residency supports artists from across the globe, working in all media. FEE: Free studio space

SUREL’S PLACE, BOISE
Website – DURATION: One month
ABOUT: Open to professional visual, literary, and performance artists: painters, writers, musicians, architects, filmmakers, and choreographers. However, due to the property’s limitations and proximity to neighbors, they cannot accommodate loud or highly messy processes, such as welding or blacksmithing. They favor artists whose work is technically advanced, unique, and conceptually valuable. In addition, residents are asked to engage with the public through one workshop and one final event. FUNDING: $100 living stipend per week; $300 travel stipend

JOAN MITCHELL CENTER, NEW ORLEANS

Website – DURATION: Six to fourteen weeks

ABOUT: Offering artists dedicated time and space for the creative process through one- to five-month residencies. Artists have opportunities to engage with arts professionals, partner arts organizations, and other community members. Private studio space, weekday meals, professional development, and public engagement. Artists must have serious commitment to artistic practice, be at a pivotal point in their careers, and be present for the entire duration of the residency. A STUDIO IN THE WOODS

ABOUT: Aims to foster a meaningful relationship between artists and the Southeastern Louisiana community, influencing our residents and, in turn, our artists and their work to have a significant impact on the region. In advance of their arrival, staff assesses each artist’s needs and begins building relationships with community resources and collaborators crucial to the evolution of their projects. Residencies are open to artists of all disciplines. Both established and emerging artists are encouraged to apply, but students are not eligible. A rigorous work ethic, dedication to public engagement, and demonstrated ability to work with colleagues and wider audiences are expected. FUNDING: $3000 stipend plus $2000 material budget, and grocery reimbursement

HAYSTACK MOUNTAIN SCHOOL OF CRAFTS

Website – DURATION: Two weeks ABOUT: The residency supports approximately fifty participants—from the craft field and other creative disciplines—who have uninterrupted time in its studios (blacksmithing, ceramics, fiber, graphics, metals, wood, and Fab Lab) to develop ideas and experiment across media. Residents may work in a single studio or move among them, depending on their interests and the nature of their work. Each studio is staffed by technicians who can assist with questions. FEES: There is no charge for tuition, room, and board. Residency participants are responsible for their travel costs and materials used during the residency.

MONSON ARTS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE, MONSON

Website – DURATION: Two- to four-week programs ABOUT: Supporting emerging and established artists and writers by providing time and space to devote to their creative practices. During residencies, a cohort of five artists and five writers is invited to immerse themselves in small-town life at the edge of Maine’s North Woods and focus intensely on their work within a creative and inspiring environment. They receive a private studio, a private bedroom in shared housing, and all meals. Applications for a residency at Monson Arts are open to anyone at any stage of their career, working in visual arts, writing, and related fields. FUNDING: $500 stipend or $250 for two-week programs

SHEEPSCOT ARTS PRESERVE, ALNA

Website – DURATION: Varies depending on the type of residency ABOUT: Offering self-guided, group, and site-specific installation residencies to give artists the space and time to explore on their own, away from the constraints of daily life. In this context, we also value community. That does not mean you have to be overly social, work alongside others, or participate in group activities. It simply means that we are all here on this property, in a communal setting, and what you contribute to the wider whole is simply who you are. We believe that exposure to unexpected ideas and techniques allows artists to develop their work in unforeseen directions. We are proud to offer a space that shows what living and working together in a peaceful, beautiful place can bring to the world. FUNDING: No charge, and stipends are available to help offset costs of childcare, travel, supplies, attendance, etc.

CHESTERWOOD RESIDENCY, BERKSHIRE ART CENTER, STOCKBRIDGE

ABOUT: Established in 2021, Chesterwood hosts a member of the National Sculpture Society (NSS) for one month each year. Selected by a committee of fellow NSS sculptors, the NSS Affiliated Artist lives in a cottage in the woods on the Chesterwood estate, which was once Daniel Chester French’s second studio, and works in a large studio ed from a 1909 garage with a high ceiling, ample light, an industrial sink, and air conditioning. The artist holds Open Studio days and concludes the residency with an artist’s talk. FUNDING: A generous stipend is provided.

MASS MOCA, NORTH ADAMS

Website – DURATION: Two or four weeks ABOUT: The studios at MASS MoCA operate year-round, hosting up to ten artists at a time for 2- or 4-week stays, and primarily accept applications from visual artists. Private, furnished studio space at MASS MoCA is available 24/7. Housing (private bedroom with a queen bed, shared kitchen, and bath) in attractive apartments directly across the street from the museum. FUNDING: The majority of our residents attend with full or partial financial aid. Our financial aid budget enables us to support most participants to some degree, with awards determined by both financial need and the artistic merit of each application, as evaluated by our selection committees.

MANSHIP ARTISTS RESIDENCY: WALKER HANCOCK RESIDENCY, CAPE ANN
Website – DURATION: Two weeks ABOUT: Once the summer retreat of Paul Manship, the sculptor of the Prometheus Fountain at Rockefeller Center, this residency offers many of the same opportunities and qualities that drew Manship to Cape Ann and are available to those who come here today seeking an escape into a restorative natural setting to spark their inner muse. As a resident, you will have access to the entire Starfield property and its facilities, as well as the Manship Artists Residency’s partner studios. Preference is given to a sculptor who has, in some way, dedicated themselves to the service of their community. Must live and work at the residency for the duration. KIMMEL HARDING NELSON CENTER FOR THE ARTS/KHN RESIDENCY, NEBRASKA CITY

Website – DURATION: Two-to-eight weeks ABOUT: Supporting established and emerging writers, visual artists, and composers by providing working and living environments that allow uninterrupted time for work, reflection, and creative growth, and by presenting and supporting arts-related programming that expands public awareness and appreciation of the arts. Since 2001, KHN has hosted more than fifty working artists each year, providing privacy for creation and ample opportunities to interact with fellow artists in a vibrant, friendly community in the rolling bluff country of eastern Nebraska. FUNDING: Residents receive a $175 weekly stipend, housing, and a private studio.

BEMIS CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART, OMAHA

Website – DURATION: Four months ABOUT: Since 1981, Bemis Center has provided artists from around the world with dedicated time, space, and resources to conduct research and create new work. In addition to financial support, residents receive technical and administrative assistance from a dedicated team of Bemis staff. Bemis residents enjoy generously sized, private live/work studios and 24-hour access to extensive installation and production spaces, including the Okada Sculpture & Ceramics Facility, a 9,000-square-foot industrial workshop for large-scale sculpture fabrication.
FUNDING: $1,250 monthly stipend and an additional $750 travel stipend.
