Bryan Rapp

Bryan Rapp
Bryan Rapp is a representational figurative sculptor and Artist-in-residence at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC. Originally from Pennsylvania, Rapp studied computer animation at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and only began sculpting as a way to cope with a debilitating disease called Avascular Necrosis, which lasted for nine years and was resolved only after a full hip replacement. Bryan became interested in “sculpture as a prosthesis” while obtaining his MFA from the University of Oklahoma, and used his past experience with disease to create bodies imperiled with internal dysfunction as a way to talk about our humanness in a world that isn’t always humane. Rapp hopes his work will challenge viewers’ ideas about disability identity, transcending diagnosis, and the role of healthcare in society.
