Garret earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles, California, in 1984. In 1988 he received a Masters degree in sculpture from California State University at Stanislaus. From 1988-2000 he was employed at the Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture, a bronze art foundry as well as teaching facility. At the Atelier he was responsible for the bronze casting needs of many of the leading contemporary artists of the time. His duties also included instruction in the art of bronze casting as well as figurative clay modeling. Since then he has worked at several other art foundries as a sub-contractor and for various other artists for their production needs. From 2009- 2012 he was an adjunct professor at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California, where he taught Figure Clay Modeling and Bronze Casting courses.
