Jonas Mikolayunas creates sculptural relief works in hardwood and resin, translating measured elevation and bathymetric data into dimensional form. He holds a BFA in Sculpture, originally trained in ceramic and metal casting before moving into wood and resin, inspired throughout by the relationship between motion and time. Working in bas-relief, precision-modeled from data and finished entirely by hand, his pieces hold a place's geologic formation and ongoing change in a single object. Subjects have included Nantucket, Block Island, Cape Ann, Maui, and alpine terrain of New England. Based in Natick, Massachusetts, Mikolayunas built his practice on commissions for private collectors before expanding into gallery-directed and self-initiated work.
