Jonas Mikolayunas creates sculptural relief works in hardwood and resin, translating measured elevation and bathymetric data into dimensional form. He holds a BFA in Sculpture, originally trained in ceramic and metal casting before moving into wood and resin, inspired throughout by the relationship between motion and time. Working in bas-relief, Jonas uses elevation and bathymetric data as a point of entry, then brings each piece into physical form through material judgment and hand finishing. His current work holds place as a moment within geologic time: evidence of formation, pressure, erosion, and continuing change. Subjects have included Nantucket, Block Island, Cape Ann, Maui, and alpine terrain of New England. Based in Natick, Massachusetts, Mikolayunas built his practice on commissions for private collectors before expanding into gallery-directed and self-initiated work.
