Sheleen P. Jones, a native of New Orleans, teaches art at Xavier University of Louisiana. She also led the New Orleans Chapter of the National Conference of Artists. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Xavier University of Louisiana and a master’s degree in Fine Art from Florida State University, focusing on sculpture. Jones is known for creating public art that honors African American leaders in civil rights and culture. Her works highlight the impact of these leaders and show how art can drive social change. In 1987, Jones gained recognition for creating a statue of the Honorable A.P. Tureaud Sr., a prominent civil rights lawyer. She also made a sculpture of Reverend Avery C. Alexander, “Big Chief Tootie” Allison Montana, and “The Healing Tree” at New Orleans East Hospital, paying tribute to Hurricane Katrina survivors.
