Basil Watson, FNSS
On Saturday, August 24, 2024 Basil Watson’s sculpture of Congressman John Lewis was unveiled to a large crowd in Decatur, GA. The 12-foot-tall bronze sculpture of the late civil rights leader replaced a contentious Confederate monument that was removed in 2020. Lewis was instrumental in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches to bring about fair voting rights for African Americans. Members of John Lewis’ family, as well as the Mayor Patti Garrett; Sen. Raphael Warnock; United States Reps. Sanford Bishop (GA-2) and Nikema Williams (GA-5); and Ambassador Andrew Young were in attendance. “It is exciting to see it going up and exciting for the city because of what he represents and what it’s replacing,” said Watson.
