Adam Matano, NSS
Adam Matano’s bronze of an Andean Condor was unveiled at Tracy Aviary at the San Diego Zoo in early September. The life-size sculpture of the bird of prey was modeled after the Aviary’s own Andy N. Condor who was a fixture at the zoo for over 60 years until his death in 2023. Andy was an ambassador for his species helping to educate Tracy Aviary visitors as well as his more than 20,000 Facebook fans about the crucial role vultures play in maintaining healthy ecosystems. The 48” tall x 40” wide statue was created based on direct measurements and scans of Andy from his lifetime and was unveiled on International Vulture Awareness Day.
