NSS Elected Member Mardie Rees won the top prize for sculpture at the California Art Club’s 115th Gold Medal Exhibition. Her winning piece, Morning Ride, is an interesting fusion of bronze and glass which Rees has has combined in other compositions. “Morning Ride is a poignant elegy to a fading legacy. A Native American woman, draped in a Navajo chief’s blanket sits astride an old horse, ” says Rees. “The horse strides forward, its muscles taut with quiet strength, yet its head bows slightly, as if sharing her burden. Her gaze, downcast, carries the weight of loss—a silent tribute to the American Indians and the erosion of their way of life, forever captured in this fusion of bronze and glass.”  The exhibition continues at the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University through September 13.
