Michael Keropian’s Sachem Daniel Nimham Monument Dedicated

On June 11, NSS Fellow Michael Keropian’s bronze of Native American and Revolutionary War Veteran, Sachem Daniel Nimham, was dedicated in upstate New York. The Town of Fishkill commissioned the eight-foot bronze statue of the political leader — or sachem — of the tribe in the lower Hudson Valley known as the Wappinger People. Nimham (1726-1778), was a leader and advocate for the enforcement of land treaties, who traveled to England in 1766 to make a case before the Lord of Trade on behalf of Native Americans whose lands were unfairly taken by settlers. During the Revolutionary War, Nimham and other Native Americans fought alongside the Continental Army against the British. Fishkill officials and supervisors were on hand for the unveiling and dedication of the memorial which is installed at the Arrowhead intersection and which previously only held a plaque to commemorate Nimham’s contributions.

Keropian, with filmmaker Jeff Hodges, filmed the whole process of the creation to installation. View the eighteen episodes on Keropian’s Sachem Daniel Nimham Sculpture page. The page also includes a link to view the sculpture’s dedication.
