Kate Brockman

The National Sculpture Society (NSS) is pleased to announce the selection of Kate Brockman for the Sisko Memorial Medal. The Medal is presented only as the occasion warrants for distinguished service to sculpture. It will be given on Saturday May 16th at the Honors and Awards Dinner held in Old Saybrook, CT.

NSS Board member, Olga Nielsen, says that Brockman’s work is “very inspiring and thought provoking.” She continues, “I’ve admired her nudes for years. Her pieces Caryatid, Faith, and Peace are among my favorite contemporary figurative sculptures. Brockman’s portraits are powerful; Brockman doesn’t just capture their likeness, but their very essence and personality. Her Harriet Tubman portrait, Fearless in Fear, is a masterpiece.”

Past NSS president, Richard Blake adds, “I’ve known Kate since she was a student and I’ve witnessed the development of her unique, personal, artistic style. Her strong, compelling sculptural statements intertwine traditional elements with contemporary concepts and concerns which provoke the viewer’s interest. Kate’s sculptures have deservedly earned her national recognition.”

Blake encouraged Kate to study sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she was awarded the prestigious Cresson Memorial Traveling Scholarship and the Toppan Prize in Drawing. Kate received two Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grants and in 2011, the National Sculpture Society awarded her the Alex J. Ettl Grant for demonstrating a commitment to sculpting and outstanding ability in her body of work. She creates her sculptures from beginning to end, through every step of the process, in her Philadelphia studio – including casting them herself in her own foundry. She has exhibited her work at the Woodmere Art Museum (Philadelphia, PA) and the Metal Museum (Memphis, TN). She recently had a solo exhibition at Werring Contemporary in Devon, PA. Kate served on the NSS Board from 2020-2023 and again from 2024 to the start of 2026.

The Sisko Memorial Medal is a uniface medallion created by and named in honor of NSS Fellow and Board Member, John Sisko (1958-2016), engraved on the reverse side with the name of the award recipient. The awards presentation is part of the Sculpture Celebration in Coastal Connecticut. For additional information, contact the NSS office at news@nationalsculpture.org or 212-764-5645 x 102.
