Stephen Layne, FNSS

On Monday, June 29, 2026, Stephen Layne’s monumental sculpture of Joe Frazier was installed in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The bronze portrait of the former heavy-weight champion now resides at the base of the steps leading up to the museum where the Rocky statue once stood. Layne created the 11-foot sculpture of the Philadelphia native and pugilist in 2015 and for over 10 years it was installed in front of the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. The pose is inspired by the one Frazier struck after knocking Muhammad Ali down to the canvas with a powerful left hook in the 15th round of 1971’s “Fight of the Century.” Layne was present at the re-installation of the sculpture, as was Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, several city officials, and Frazier’s daughter, Jacquelyn Frazier-Lyde. “This is about honoring World Heavyweight Champion Smokin’ Joe Frazier not just as a champion, but as a man who worked hard, stayed grounded, and gave back to his city,” said Frazier-Lyde. “Our family is proud that his legacy will be shared in a place of cultural significance that reflects everything he stood for.”
