StudioEIS
On November 1, StudioEIS unveiled Clara Luper National Sit-In Plaza in Oklahoma City, OK. The multi-figure piece depicts the events of August 19, 1958, when 13 students from the NAACP Youth Council (ages 5-17) and their teacher, Clara Luper, a member of the NAACP and Civil Rights activist, took seats at Katz Drug Store and asked to be served. Denied service, they sat without speaking for three days as they were spat on and cursed at, but after returning for a third day, Katz began serving them ending segregation at the 65 Katz Drug Stores in five states. The installation, which contains 14 figures and took 4 years to create, is in downtown Oklahoma City. On hand for the event were Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt and 10 of the original sit-inners.
